10th Annual ‘Five Churches Carol Walk’
10th Annual ‘Five Churches Carol Walk’ The 10th Annual ‘Five Churches Carol Walk’ organised by the North Belfast Inter Church Committee took place this year on the 3rd Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday). A wonderful group of faithful people turned out to support the event. (As a bonus, the weather was kinder than in previous years!). This year the starting point was the Methodist Church on Cavehill Road, then to Fortwilliam Macrory, St Peter’s Church of Ireland, Rosemary Presbyterian and concluding at Church of the Resurrection (Parish Centre) where a warming and welcome cup of tea was served. As always it was an excellent opportunity to renew friendships and to make new ones. This event is a unique and beautiful way to celebrate Advent and to join in Readings, reflection and song with our fellow Christian neighbours in the Parish.

On the Second Sunday of Advent, a time of reflection was celebrated in Holy Family Church at 5.00pm. The beautiful Church setting was ideal for taking time, in the midst of the annual hustle and bustle, to reflect on the Season of Advent and the imminent Birth of Our Saviour.  Clergy and friends from neighbouring Churches were also welcomed.
An inspiring selection of readings and poetry included The Nativity from St Luke’s Gospel, read by Rev Lesley Carroll; ‘Advent 1955’ by John Betjeman, read by Noel Heaney; ‘Have You Ever Heard Snow?’ recited by Siobhan McQuaid and Patrick Kavanagh’s ‘A Christmas Childhood’ presented by Mary Loughran.
The choice of music and song was equally uplifting and inspiring and ranged from popular and familiar pieces – Ag Crióst an Siól, Pachelbel: Canon in D, Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, exquisitely performed by Stephen Cullen, Paul McCusker, Owen Denvir and Elizabeth Donaghy - to the haunting ethereal airs of the Wexford Carols, performed by sisters Maighread and Triona NiDhomhnaill. Lesser known pieces - an American Spiritual, ‘Rise Up Shepherd and Follow’ and a Spanish Carol ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ were sung by Siobhan Martin who was accompanied on the cello by her husband, Neil. We were also treated to a performance of one of Neil’s own compositions.
The ever popular and renowned couple Helena and Donal McCriskin enthralled us with their performances of ‘Quiarespixit’ from Bach’s Magnificat, ‘How Beautiful Are The Feet’ from the Messiah and the ‘Litany to the Holy Spirit’ by Peter Hurfort, a setting of a poem by Robert Herrick.
On behalf of the Parish Community we express sincere thanks to all those who raised our hearts and minds through the generous sharing of their wonderful gifts and talents. Congratulations and thanks also to Maire Hughes for organising the occasion and for the team who served refreshments afterwards in the Gathering Space.
The event was thoroughly enjoyable and one of the highlights of the year and I’m sure that like me you hope it will become an annual feature in the Parish Diary.

Annual Christmas Fair
Christmas Fair

Another very successful and enjoyable Christmas Fair was held in the Parish Centre on Sunday 30th November. There was something for everyone – Father Emerson and Denis kept the Rickety Wheel spinning (Man U style), Father Crossey was seen spotting a potential antique, Mr and Mrs Claus, ably supported by an enthusiastic team of Elves, received many guests into their grotto, bottles and cakes disappeared like snow off a ditch. Business was equally brisk at the toy stall, the ballot table, the Lucky Dip and in the Craft Room. The Tea Room was an oasis of calm and a chance to enjoy a cup of warming brew in good company.
A big vote of thanks is due to the organisers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the event was successful and fun filled for all and also to those who supported the event or contributed in any way.

Mass with Anointing of the Sick
Mass with Anointing of the Sick

‘Any one of you who is ill should send for the elders of the Church, and they must anoint the sick person with oil in name of the Lord and pray over him’. (James 5:14)

The annual Mass with Anointing of the Sick was celebrated in Holy Family Church on the Feast of Christ the King at 3.00pm. Despite the squally and cold day a wonderful number of Parishioners, supported by family and friends, participated in the Sacrament. Members of the St Vincent de Paul Conference, the Liturgy Committee and the Guides gave generously of their time to prepare the Church, the Gathering Space and to serve refreshments afterwards.

In our Parish, Father Emerson, Canon Murray and Father Crossey share the healing touch of Jesus with those Parishioners of any age who are ill in body or mind or soul, also with those who are elderly and frail. Together with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Sacrament of the Sick gives people the experience of the healing power of Christ and the peace of mind which only he can give.
The Sacrament of the Sick can be celebrated at home, in a hospital, hospice or nursing home or at the scene of an accident. Once a year it is celebrated as a community in the Church but generally it is celebrated in the homes of housebound Parishioners during the ‘First Friday visitation’.
Two outward signs of the Sacrament are the ‘laying on of hands’ and the anointing with Oil of the Sick on the forehead and hands. The ‘laying on of hands’ and the anointing symbolise the giving of strength, power, healing, the gift of the Holy Spirit and consecration – the sick are invited to consecrate and use their illness as part of Christ’s redemptive work.

A sincere thank you to all those involved in the preparation and celebration of this very moving ceremony.

Developing World Group Coffee Morning and Fair Trade Stall

Developing World

On Sunday 26th October a very successful and enjoyable Coffee Morning was held in the Gathering Space of Holy Family Church. A wonderful selection of delectable eats was prepared and served by members of the Developing World Group – Dolores, Catherine, Roisin and Michelle. The monies raised will be used to fund a drought relief project in Ethiopia. As temperatures dipped to single figures accompanied by lashing rain and howling winds, a warming cuppa and scrumptious home made cake and an opportunity to chat with friends were just what the doctor ordered.
At the Fair Trade Stall Brenda and Sheila displayed a colourful and practical variety of Fair Trade items. They too were delighted that business was brisk and thoughts turned towards Advent and Christmas gift ideas. Many thanks to the organisers and to all the Parishioners who supported the event.

Altar Servers Outing

On Saturday 27th September the Altar Servers met in the grounds of Holy Family Church for the beginning of an afternoon of fun and friendship.
They set off in high spirits, with their leaders, for the Odyssey Arena. The first activity was a bowling session followed by the ‘Choc-o-Bloc Workshop’ experience. This gave everyone the opportunity to perfect the ‘art of the chocolatier’ and at the same time to do lots of finger licking and tasting!!
By now everyone had worked up healthy appetites so the next stop was ‘Pizza Hut’ for pizza and ice-cream. The pictures capture the moment!!
All too soon the afternoon had come to an end but everyone went home with happy memories and the count down has already begun until next year’s trip!!

A big thank you to the Altar Servers for the role they play in the celebration of the Liturgy. If you are aged 9+ and would like to be an Altar Server please contact the Parish Office on 9074 3119.

Holy Family Church Symbolism of the Image

Icon  Iconm  Icon  Icon

The work of mounting the Image on the front façade of Holy Family Church is nearing completion. The Image was designed by Eamon Hedderman (Architect) and George Walsh who created the Reredos, stained glass windows and Holy Doors.
The raised image, worked in metal, symbolises a cross and the three rounded shapes represent the Holy Family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus.
The background comprises ‘threads’ symbolising the weaving together of the members of the Parish community and the frayed edging represents our imperfections and need for forgiveness and reconciliation.

On Sunday 29th June, the Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul, a group of Parishioners from Holy Family Parish had the privilege of representing the Parish in St Peter’s Cathedral on the occasion of the Episcopal Ordination of the Right Reverend Monsignor Noel Treanor as Bishop of Down and Connor.
Cardinal Sean Brady was the principal celebrant, assisted by Bishop Patrick Walsh and Doctor Joseph Duffy, Bishop of Clogher. The congregation comprised representatives of each of the 88 Parishes in the Diocese, Ecumenical Representatives, Diocesan Clergy as well as many visitors from Europe and other parts of the world. The Bishop’s brother and sister and their respective families were also present along with friends from his native Parish in the Diocese of Clogher.
Bishop Noel has chosen as his Episcopal Motto a phrase from St Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians 5:8 – Sicut Filii Lucis Ambulate – Walk as Children of Light.

We congratulate Bishop Noel and assure him of our prayers and support. Ad multos annos.

On Sunday 18th May the Year 4 boys and girls of Holy Family PS celebrated First Holy Communion during 11am Mass in Holy Family Church. Father Emerson was the Celebrant and the school Choir and Instrumentalists led the music. We congratulate all the young people on reaching this stage in their faith journey and thank their teachers, parents and School Chaplain for all the preparations which made the Liturgy so special and memorable. The display of pupils work in the Gathering Space was excellent and they can all be proud of their individual contributions. Parishioners are invited to prayerfully support the young people so that they may continue to grow in faith and deepen their relationship with God.

Annual Big Draw

The annual Big Draw Night was held in the Parish Centre on Wednesday 30th April. Entertainment was provided by ‘Sunshine’, a very versatile group so there was music to suit all tastes. The evening was very enjoyable and successful.
The high point was the actual draw managed by the loyal and enthusiastic team comprising Angela, Adelaide, Rosaleen and Mary ably assisted by Fr Emerson who kept the ‘craic’ going while results were verified.
Congratulations to all the prize winners – click on the Bulletin tab for details.
Many thanks to the Fund Raising Team and Promoters – the new draw commences on May 12th with very attractive weekly prizes. If you haven’t yet joined and would like to just telephone the Parish Office on 9074 3119.

A fundraising concert in aid of Fortwilliam and Macrory Presbyterian Church was held on Friday 25th April in Castle High School. A delightful programme show cased the talents of the City of Belfast School of Music Junior Band and Percussion Ensemble and those of the Holy Family PS pupils who are members of the Choir, Traditional Group, Flute Group and Djembe Drummers.
The School Hall was packed to capacity and an excellent evening was enjoyed by one and all.

Rev Lesley Carroll concluded the evening with a warm word of thanks to all those who had supported the event. We wish her well in all her fundraising projects.

Holy Family Parish Golf Society
As we start our 9th season I look back and wonder where the past 8 years have gone! In late 1999, during a conversation with Fr Colm McBride about golf, I mentioned that it was a pity that there was no golf society in the Parish and he immediately replied: “Let’s call a meeting and get one started”. Well by February 2000 we had held our third meeting and our first outing was organised for Cushendall in March! The response was tremendous and with a membership of around 30 we were up and golfing.

A Reflection for Holy Week

Members of Fortwilliam Musical Society, Rosemary Presbyterian Church Choir and McQuiston Memorial Church Choir presented a beautiful selection of music and Readings reflecting the themes of Holy Week and Easter in Holy Family Church on Tuesday 18th March. The Choir was conducted by Isobel Crowe and William Cairns was the Musical Director.
The evening offered us a welcome opportunity to take time out to pause and reflect, in song and word, on the mysteries of the Easter Triduum.
Afterwards everyone enjoyed a cup of tea, delicious tray bakes and plenty of chat in the company of friendships stretching back over 27 years.

The generous sharing of time and talent by the musicians and choir members is greatly appreciated.

Members of Lisbreen Apostolic Society hosted a very successful and enjoyable Coffee Morning in the Presbytery of St Thérèse after the 10.00am Mass on Saturday 8th March. All money raised will go towards projects in the Developing World. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful hospitality and the opportunity to relax and chat while supporting an excellent cause. A big thank you to the members for raising the profile of the Apostolic Society and for giving Parishioners an opportunity to lend support.

Capella Caeciliana

Capella Caeciliana
On Sunday 9th March the members of Capella Caeciliana, conducted by Rita Goldsmith, (unfortunately Donal McCriskin was indisposed), sang Evening Prayer in Holy Family Church at 5.00pm. They inspired and uplifted all present with the beautiful quality and integrity of their singing and organ accompaniment. It was a very prayerful occasion and a welcome opportunity to take ‘time out’ to reflect and be still. We thank the members of the Capella for using their talents in such a unique way and wish the group well in their future projects.

Celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation (St Thérèse of Lisieux PS)
Celebration of Comfirmation

~ The Sacrament of Confirmation ~
On Thursday 21st February the Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated at 4.00pm in Holy Family Church. This was another significant occasion for the Parish as it was the first time the Sacrament was celebrated in the new Church. Bishop Patrick Walsh conferred the Sacrament on the Year 7 boys and girls of St Thérèse of Lisieux PS. It was a beautiful ceremony which the young pupils, their parents, sponsors and family members were fully engaged in. The young people read and prayed sincerely and they enhanced the Liturgy with singing and music.  During his homily, the Bishop stressed the importance of family life, prayer and participating in Mass on Sundays.
The Friends of St Thérèse of Lisieux PS served refreshments afterwards in the Youth Resource Centre and Bishop Walsh enjoyed meeting the Year 7 pupils individually, signing their Confirmation Booklets and having lots of pictures taken.

On Monday 11th February Year 7 boys and girls in Holy Family PS celebrated a ‘Service of Light’ in Holy Family Church, led by Father Emerson

Parents, teachers and the boys and girls joined together to pray, celebrate and share the Light of Christ in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation which will be conferred by Bishop Patrick Walsh on Monday 3rd March at 11.00am in Holy Family Church.

The beautiful Service was rich in symbolism ~ Father Emerson lit a candle for each young person from the Paschal Candle (reminding them of their Baptism) and then handed it to their parents who presented it to their child saying: ‘Receive the Light of Christ’.

The Parish Community is supporting the young people by praying for them, that they will be filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and be builders of God’s Kingdom.

Last Mass - Church of the Resurrection Resurrection Last Mass
Click Image to view gallery >>>

The last two Masses were celebrated in the Church of the Resurrection on Saturday 2nd February at 6.00pm and Sunday 3rd February at 11.30am by Father Sean Emerson Adm. The music for the Vigil Mass was provided by the Choir and organ under the leadership of Mark Laverty who has been the Choirmaster and Organist since 1990. The music for the 11.30am Mass was provided by the Folk Group under the leadership of Paul McElkerney. It was a sad and emotional occasion as many members of the congregation had been present at the Solemn Dedication and Opening of the Church on Easter Sunday, 6th April, 1980 and had worshipped in the Church ever since.
Great relief was experienced when Bishop Walsh announced his decision about the future of the Church and the site - firstly to retain a place of worship on Cavehill Road and secondly that a new Church should be built. Almost coinciding with the first day of spring, this news gave Parishioners great reassurance, hope and confidence.
(You can keep up to date with developments by logging onto the website regularly).
After the 11.30am Mass refreshments were served in the Parish Centre. Despite the cold and wet day a huge number of Parishioners enjoyed the opportunity to chat, to reminisce and to look forward to a new period of growth in the Parish community.

(The ‘usual suspects’ who provided the beverages are going to do an advance course so as to be in a position to offer Latte, Americano and Hot Chocolate, served with generous dollops of Alpine Ranges of whipped cream!!! The challenge to meet this new benchmark has been thrown down by the younger members of the Scout troop!!!!)
