Holy Family Parish Golf Society
As we start our 9th season I look back and wonder where the past 8 years have gone! In late 1999, during a conversation with Fr Colm McBride about golf, I mentioned that it was a pity that there was no golf society in the Parish and he immediately replied: “Let’s call a meeting and get one started”. Well by February 2000 we had held our third meeting and our first outing was organised for Cushendall in March! The response was tremendous and with a membership of around 30 we were up and golfing.
I volunteered as Secretary, Hugh Daly became the Treasurer and Brendan Macauley our first Captain. It was decided that the Captaincy should run for 2 years. Brendan was followed by Anne Miskelly, Larry McManus, Jim Ferguson and our Captain for this year and the next is Alacoque Logan. Hugh and I continue to share the organising of the Society and the running of each year’s outings.
During those years we have seen members come and go. New golfers are always welcome and we always look forward to meeting up again with past members at any outing they wish to attend.
Our mission statement is:
‘The Holy Family Parish Golf Society exists to encourage Parishioners, through the game of golf, to enjoy one another’s company in a spirit of generosity and hospitality’.
This is clearly the way we have continued, all of us making new friends each year with Parishioners we only ever saw at Mass and may otherwise never have spoken to.
We have 6 to 8 outings each year, playing mainly on Sundays at a wide variety of courses including Cushendall, Fortwilliam, Hilton, Balmoral, Clandeboyne, Down Royal, Moyola, Spa, Rockmount, Carrickfergus and Greenacres. To make these occasions more sociable we always organise a meal afterwards in the Club concerned. This year we are returning to at least 6 of the Clubs above. The dates and details will be printed in the Parish Bulletin two weeks before each outing.
So if you are a golfer and would like to meet fellow Parishioners through the game of golf, then please pick up the phone and contact me:
